Capelongue Hotel Review – What you need to know

Capelongue is a luxury, five-star hotel located a short walk from the peaceful Provençal village of Bonnieux. Capelongue is not a stop along the way, it’s the destination. In contrast to the backdrop of ancient villages and lavender fields Capelongue is a modern aesthetic dream. Almost sunshine yellow stripes adorn the pool towels and complimentary gym bag/yoga mat. You don’t get this kind of service in your average holiday stay.

Capelongue is part of the Beaumier hotel group which includes the nearby Le Moulin, Lourmarin hotel and Le Galinier guesthouse in Lourmarin. Arriving at Capelongue you’re greeted with refreshments (and biscuits) and a map for exploring the resort which will come in handy on your relaxing self-guided tour of the grounds.

Capelongue hotel details

  • 57 rooms
  • 2 swimming pools
  • 2 restaurants (both featured in the Michelin Guide and one Michelin Star restaurant)
  • Spa with Roman bath and relaxation rooms
  • Views for days
  • Sports facilities
  • Daily activities

Capelongue Hotel review – The Rooms

We stayed in a Superior bedroom at Capelongue accessible by a private stone staircase up to the balcony. This rooms at Capelongue are exceptionally modern with high ceilings, comfort and relaxation front of mind. The peaceful, earthy tones are a stark contrast to the sunshine yellow branding that greets you elsewhere in the hotel. We arrived to complimentary snacks and a personalised card in our room.

The large double bed was spacious and the bathroom included a bathtub and large rainfall style shower. I loved the provision of the Capelongue branded sports bag and yoga mat. The bag is available to purchase from their store, which I couldn’t resist bringing back home as a souvenir from such a special stay.

Capelongue Hotel Review – The Food situation

Capelongue is a foodie’s dream hotel, especially if you like fine dining and Provençal cuisine. With two onsite restaurants you’ll be spoiled for choice. La Bastide is the on-site one Michelin Star restaurant at Capelongue, serving an exclusive tasting menu which I’ve heard is very special.

We opted to dine at the slightly more relaxed La Bergerie restaurant with a beautiful terrace. The pink sunset views over Bonnieux were truly memorable. The menu features seasonal specialties like courgette flowers stuffed with herb-infused chicken mousseline, truffled pizza and a wood-fired main courses section. I ordered the grilled beef steak which was an excellent choice, cooked in a simple rosemary and butter baste and served with an assortment of potatoes, vegetables and salad. My sister enjoyed the biggest pork rack I’ve seen! They have plenty of vegetarian options too.

One thing that stands out at La Bergerie is the immense dessert buffet. With everything from fresh fruit to profiteroles, lemon meringue to cookies, chocolate mousse to tiramisu, make sure to keep some room for a sweet treat after dinner.

Breakfast is served at La Bergerie also where they have a similar buffet style set up. There’s a continental style section with plenty of pastries, cereals, cheese, crudités and a hot breakfast section. They also cook eggs to order and what could be better than a French omelette in the French countryside!

Capelongue Hotel Review – Things to Do

Although Capelongue is pitched as a hotel to relax in, as a type-A planner who loves to keep busy I was pleasantly occupied by their activity schedule and facilities. In fact I had to make sure to allocate a pool day in my Luberon, Provence travel itinerary to make the most of it all.

You’ll find two outdoor swimming pools at Capelongue. We relaxed at the 25m lap pool which had pool boy service. Of course we made the most of this ordering cocktails and chips (fries) to our sun loungers. Pro tip, I found the best sunset view at the resort was from this swimming pool area.

Don’t forget to visit the complimentary spa facilities where you can enjoy the Roman bath, steam room and relaxation room. Spa services are available for guests to book also.

There’s a yoga area at Capelongue and during our stay we saw them put the finishing touches on a Padel court! They provide a daily activity schedule which includes yoga, running and more if you fancy joining in a group activity.

Capelongue Hotel Review – Things to do nearby

Read my Provence travel guide for foodies who want to explore the beautiful Luberon region of France. This includes details of villages to visit in Provence, where to eat and activities you can’t miss on your Luberon travels.

Since Capelongue is located in the Luberon region of Provence there are plenty of activities nearby whether that’s exploring the perched villages of Provence, taking on an outdoor hike or mountain biking challenge or visiting the vibrant lavender fields.

Explore the nearby village of Bonnieux:

Bonnieux is a remarkable village in that its history is not shrouded by tourism. We walked 10 minutes from capelongue and before long we were on the winding, cobbled paths of Bonnieux being greeted by locals sipping their evening wine. There’s a lovely church to visit at the top of the hill and plenty of restaurant options too if you fancy eating away from the hotel for a change. We had dinner at Les Terrasses de Bonnieux which has a perfect golden-hour view.
