Travel Tips for visiting Marseille
If you’re in a hurry here are my best travel tips for visiting Marseille in France.
Getting to Marseille: Marseille Provence airport is close to the city, making Marseille an excellent option for a weekend break. Plan your airport transfer ahead of time. The public shuttle arrives every 10 minutes and costs €10. You can book a taxi for around €40-€60.
Getting around Marseille: I suggest booking the Marseille city pass which allows you to travel with ease on the public buses and metros. The city pass also gives you entry into certain attractions and lots of discounts.
Planning your Marseille travel itinerary: I’m working on a one-day Marseille travel itinerary so watch this space! I recommend planning your itinerary ahead of time although it’s not necessarily the kind of place where you need to have restaurant reservations. It’s a nice city to wander around in so definitely build in some free time to explore neighbourhoods like Panier.
Where to stay in Marseille
If you’re planning a visit to Marseille I recommend either staying near the Vieux Porte or old port area or else toward the city. With the metros it’s pretty easy to get around wherever you base yourself.
My Marseille Hotel choice

We stayed at Mama Shelter Marseille, an industrial style modern hotel a short walk from the old port. I’m working on a Mama Shelter Hotel review to share with you, if you’re looking for something contemporary and budget friendly this might be the hotel for you.
Here are my other hotel recommendations for your stay in Marseille:

Marseille Travel Food Guide – all the food you have to try in Marseille and where to try them

I love when a city has an abundance of unique local food to be explored! Marseille is such a good foodie city to visit. Not only is it the home of the traditional Bouillabasse but there are lots of other unique Marseille food specialities you can’t miss on your Marseille travels.
- Bouillabasse – this Provençal fish soup originated from Marseille. Eating bouillabasse is an experience in itself as it’s usually served over two courses. My advice is skip the starters as this is one huge portion! I recommend trying bouillabasse at restaurant la Miramar down by the old port.
- Navettes – these boat shaped orange blossom biscuits are so fragrant and unique. Definitely not to be missed on your foodie adventure in Marseille. Head up the hill to Four des Navettes which has been around since 1781.
- Madeleine – I love this French baked treat which comes in lots of different flavours. Best enjoyed at La Madeleine du Panier where I also tried a delightful cannelle de Marseille.
- Seafood – Marseille with the famous fish market is a seafood haven! I enjoyed a fabulous Moules Frites at Coquille bistros Marin.
- Black ice cream – yes you read that right! There’s a unique black ice cream flavour available only in Marseille and you’ll have to guess the secret ingredient. You can find this at Vanille Noir.

The best way to experience the local food of Marseille is to book a Marseille food tour
