Why choose Switzerland for your honeymoon?
We chose Switzerland for our honeymoon because it’s a country with such great variety we wanted to explore more of. I had seen those iconic Swiss views all over social media and apart from a brief work trip to Zurich I hadn’t seen much of the incredible Swiss landscape at all. We had spent two weeks in Koh Samui, Thailand earlier in our wedding year so fancied staying a bit closer to home for our honeymoon. Switzerland has a reputation for luxury, fine food and bucket list experiences like the Glacier Express, so this felt like the perfect honeymoon destination for us.

Unmissable Swiss Honeymoon experiences
One of the main reasons we booked Switzerland for our honeymoon was to experience just a few of those bucket list experiences Switzerland is known for. We didn’t manage to squeeze all of them in so we’ll just have to return to Switzerland soon, as I need to ride an Alpine coaster at least once in my life!

Getting to Switzerland and travelling around on your Swiss Honeymoon
Getting to Switzerland is easy. We flew into Zurich and we actually flew out of Milan as we ended our Swiss honeymoon in Ticino, in Southern Switzerland. And if getting to Switzerland is easy, getting around Switzerland is even easier. The Swiss Travel Pass is your new best friend on your Swiss honeymoon. This will make your life so much easier when it comes to travelling in Switzerland.
I advise booking a two week Swiss Travel pass ahead of the trip. This allows you to travel on most public transport in Switzerland without making a reservation. Just remember that some of the luxury train rides in Switzerland require a seat reservation in addition to the Swiss Travel Pass. Swiss travel is a dream. The trains run like clockwork with a high class information and service experience.
Lucerne Travel Guide

The first stop on your Swiss honeymoon has to be Lucerne (Luzern). Lucerne is one of the most underrated European travel destinations in my opinion. With the pretty Chapel bridge centrepiece it is absolutely beautiful in the early Summer months. Think peaceful lake views and unique mountain experiences.
Where to stay in Lucerne
The most famous hotel near Lucerne Is Park Hotel Vitznau which would make a perfect honeymoon hotel stay with a spa and unique view of Lake Lucerne. If you want something more unique and magical I recommend the Château Gütsch where you can stay in a 19th-century castle, overlooking the town of Lucerne. For a memorable night in the mountains you can actually stay at the top of Mount Pilatus in the famous Hotel Pilatus-Kulm.
We stayed at the nearby Seehotel Pilatus in Hergiswil. It’s all really easily connected with regular ferry boats on the lake. This hotel has a fabulous spa, lakeside swimming and the most peaceful lakeside atmosphere, I loved it.
Things to do in Lucerne
We spent two days in Lucerne and that was plenty of time to experience the big ticket items like Mount Pilatus, lake boat ride, the old town of Lucerne and Mount Rigi. Here are some of the best activities for your visit to Lucerne:
- Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip
- Summer toboggan on Mount Pilatus
- Boat ride on Lake Lucerne
- Mount Rigi Cogwheel train
- Lucerne Old Town
- See the lion Monument
- Walk across Chapel Bridge
Now it’s time to travel by train from Lucerne to Interlaken.
Interlaken travel guide

No Swiss travel itinerary is complete without the inclusion of ever popular Interlaken. A popular spot for tourists, don’t overlook this Swiss town. The lakeside and Mountain views are simply breathtaking and there’s no shortage of activities or day trips from Interlaken. From Lucerne it’s a short train ride to Interlaken.
Where to stay in Interlaken
We chose to stay at Hotel Du Nord in Interlaken because of the central location and this was a great choice.
Things to do in Interlaken
We spent two days in Interlaken but you could easily spend longer as this is such a great base for day trips and there are so many activities to choose from in Interlaken.
- Climb Harder Kulm for a beautiful view of the lakes
- Paragliding in Interlaken and if you’re not up for that challenge it’s just as fun watching the paragliders land in the main park in Interlaken
- Day Trip to Jungfraujoch
- Day trip to Murren
- See the waterfall at Lauterbrunnen
- Aareschlucht Gorge walk
- Canyon swing in Grindelwald
Next, take the Golden pass Express train from Interlaken to Montreux. The panoramic views on this train trip are incredible.
Montreux travel guide

Montreux might be known for casinos and jazz but perched on Lac lemon it makes a perfect romantic honeymoon destination too. It’s a great base to explore the UNESCO wine region of Lavaux and experience one of the most unique day trips in Switzerland – the Chocolate train.
Where to stay in Montreux
Montreux has such beautiful lakeside hotels! We stayed at Hotel du grand lac excelsior and my favourite part was the hotel room balcony with a view of the lake.
Things to do in Montreux
Here are some of my favourite activities and day trips from Montreux:
- See the Freddy Mercury statue
- Gruyères City Cheese and Chocolate Day Tour
- Walk around lake Geneva
- Visit Chateu Chillon
- Wine tasting in Lavaux wine region
- Glacier 3000 day trip
- Chocolate train day trip
- Ride the cogwheel train up Rochers-de-Naye
You’ll then take the train from Montreux to Zermatt and make sure to open the train windows for a glimpse of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt travel guide

Seeing the Matterhorn is a must on your Swiss honeymoon. This may just have been my favourite part of our Swiss honeymoon. You’ve got Summer hikes, incredible food and beautiful alpine spas to relax in after a day in the mountains. It all feels very special as Zermatt is a car-free town so it feels like you’ve got the place all to yourself.
Where to stay in Zermatt
Zermatt is such a peaceful place to start on your Swiss honeymoon. I loved the alpine spa vibes in the middle of the Swiss alps. We stayed at the Alpen Resort & Spa which has a modern spa and outdoor hot tub. We even saw the paragliders overhead as we relaxed in the spa!
Things to do in Zermatt
Summer or Winter, there are plenty of activities and things to do in Zermatt. We only spent one night here on our Swiss honeymoon but I would love to return one day and spend more time in Zermatt. I’d even go as far as saying, this was my favourite stop on our Swiss honeymoon.
- Hiking in the Swiss Alps – There are no shortage of hikes in Zermatt. I recommend the five lakes trail for beautiful lake views of the Matterhorn.
- Tandem Paragliding Flight with Matterhorn View
- Gornergrat Railway
- Hotel spa
- Dinner at Brasserie Uno for unique Michelin Star dining
Luxury Train Rides on your Swiss Honeymoon

If you want to experience Switzerland’s luxury train rides now is your time. Take the famous Glacier Express train with its beautiful panoramic carriages from Zermatt to Chur. For a truly memorable experience and since it’s your honeymoon, why not book excellence class! We booked first class on board the Glacier Express and also enjoyed a lovely lunch.
You can stay in Chur for one night (or more) and then take the Bernina Express train early the next morning to Tirano. This is one of the most incredible experiences, the glacier views are truly incredible and there’s a photo stop on the way. From Tirano book the Bernina Express bus to travel around Lake Como and into Lugano in the Italian-speaking Ticino region of Switzerland.
Lugano travel guide

You will not believe you’re still in Switzerland when you arrive in Lugano in the Italian-speaking Ticino region of Switzerland. Right by Lake Como and with a mild temperature, surrounded by palm trees this is one part of Switzerland you don’t want to miss. I’m so happy we ended our Swiss Honeymoon in Lugano, it’s a really special place to visit.
Where to stay in Lugano
Lugano has the most beautiful villas and hotels to stay in. We stayed at the beautiful garden style resort Park Hotel Principe in Lugano and I can’t recommend it enough. With a beautiful outdoor pool, it really is the peaceful escape you’ll need after a day exploring Lugano.
Things to do in Lugano
The activities and things to do in Lugano are so different to the rest of Switzerland. It’s this diversity in experience that I absolutely love about travelling Switzerland.
- Hike Monte San Salvatore
- Rent a boat on Lake Lugano
- Visit a grotto restaurant only accessible by boat
- Take a day trip to Lake Como
We had the best time on our Swiss honeymoon and made memories we’ll treasure forever. If you have any questions about planning a Swiss honeymoon, any of the Swiss destinations we visited or activities recommended just pop a comment and I’ll get back to you.
